about
Youssef Sawires (aka Youfez) is an Egyptian/Australian percussionist and producer based in Sydney. In many ways he has consistently and simultaneously been interested in both eastern and western musical cultures. This is reflected through his respected discipline playing clay goblet drums (made by his father) whilst studying drum kit at Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
His experimental approach to making beats is an extension of this theme, where the line between producing and playing in a drum ensemble is blurred. This is clear in his debut EP 'طقطقو ودانكم ' (Crack Your Ears), which has been deeply influenced by his Egyptian roots, and a lot of listening to Nigerian ogene music, rumba and bata from Cuba.
The Debut EP 'طقطقو ودانكم ' (Crack Your Ears) Is due out in 2023 on La Sape Records.
